Ranking the Destiny 2 Showcases (Shadowkeep-Final Shape)
Ranking Every Destiny 2 Reveal Livestream (Shadowkeep-Final Shape)
After the Final Shape showcase just came out yesterday, I thought now would be a good time to rank the past 5 Destiny 2 live streams in terms of reveals and set expectations.
5. Final Shape
There is a lot to love about The Final Shape showcase. The new supers look really fun, the narrative and destination space will hopefully be really intriguing to play through, and finally getting an in-game Looking for Group (LFG) feature next season is exciting, as are the many quality of life updates coming soon. Other than that, Bungie was extremely tightlipped about most elements of the new expansion. And I get it, you want this finale to be a surprise, “vacuum sealed” campaign that will supposedly tie up all loose ends of Destiny’s Light and Darkness Saga. But by saying that, and having that be evident in the showcase, that doesn’t leave a lot in the way of reveals for the community to get excited about. It’s not a bad showcase, don't get me wrong, but it is definitely the most whelming of the 5.
4. Shadowkeep
Expectations were high for this reveal. Bungie, just 6 months ago, separated from Activision Blizzard and was now fully independent, and they released some of the best content Destiny 2 had ever seen in the Menagerie 6 player activity. With these 2 elements players were excited to see what was on the horizon for Destiny. Destiny 2 available on steam, all year 1 content available for all players as the game was going into a F2P model, Eris Morn was back, the moon was back, a Black Garden raid, and the list goes on. This was an exciting time to be a Destiny fan because it felt like Bungie was able to chart their own course, and this livestream had the overall vibe of Bungie really letting players in on some of the dev process. These live streams are usually very high production, which is great, but Shadowkeep’s reveal felt down to earth which was a nice change of pace.
3. Beyond Light
The Beyond Light reveal might be higher on the list if it wasn’t for the Destiny Content Vault. Finding out that a solid chunk of the game was being deleted still doesn’t feel good 3 years later, and the negative effects of the content vault are still being felt today, as once deleted weapons are reintroduced as new seasonal offerings. Other than that dark cloud, the Beyond Light reveal was amazing. New darkness subclass, a promise of 2 future expansions (The Witch Queen and Lightfall), Destiny 2 on next gen consoles, a cool looking season, Vault of Glass returning, and a free dungeon available on the same day. Overall, a really invigorating showcase, even when taking into consideration the DCV.
2. Lightfall
The Lightfall showcase had all the hype and expectation you would expect from one of these things, and Bungie really delivered: a new Darkness subclass (with a grapple hook!), loadouts coming to the game, Kings Fall returning, facing off against Calus and the Witness. Players were expecting this to be very similar to Avengers Infinity War, where we ultimately lose, and must pick up the pieces of what we have left to have the grand finale in the Final Shape, and from the looks of what was shown, it seemed like we were getting that.
1. The Witch Queen
These showcases have all been on the spectrum of good to great, but only one has been able to raise the bar so high that I don’t think it can ever be topped, and that’s the Witch Queen showcase. From frame one this is all gas no brakes, as reveal after reveal just blows you away. Hive Ghosts, Hive with light powers, glaives, weapon crafting, Final Shape name reveal, season 15 reveal, cross play, 30th anniversary pack. This reveal had it all. Not a beat was missed and the energy from the studio was just exploding off the screen. They told us about the legendary campaign and compared their efforts to God of War, DOOM, and Halo. Their excitement led to our excitement, it’s just an excellent reveal top to bottom and as I mentioned earlier, I don’t think it can ever be beaten in this type of ranked list.
